Comprehensive ADHD Assessment in Brighton

Are you seeking an ADHD assessment in Brighton & Hove? Many adults can struggle with concentration, feel overwhelmed by daily tasks, or might recognise ADHD traits in themselves after a family member's diagnosis. Whether you're experiencing difficulties at work, in relationships, or managing daily responsibilities, a professional ADHD assessment can provide the clarity and understanding you need.

An ADHD assessment opens the door to receiving effective support, workplace adjustments, and appropriate treatment options. Most people report that having finally understood whether or not they have ADHD can bring a sense of relief and also, quite possibly, some validation for a lifetime of struggles.

I offer comprehensive, evidence-based private ADHD assessments for adults aged 16 and over in Brighton & Hove. As an HCPC registered Chartered Psychologist I provide thorough diagnostic evaluations using internationally recognised assessment protocols (DSM-5 criteria).

ADHD assessments can help you understand yourself better, access workplace or educational adjustments, and receive appropriate treatment recommendations. Each assessment includes a detailed diagnostic report suitable for sharing with your GP, employer, or educational institution.

During your ADHD assessment, we will explore your symptoms within the context of your whole life story. I look at when and how your ADHD symptoms became apparent to you or others, how they've changed over time, and their impact on your relationships, work, education, and daily functioning. This holistic approach ensures an accurate diagnosis and meaningful recommendations.

I will furthermore take a detailed developmental and family history, looking carefully at any challenges you are experiencing right now.

I aim to provide an enjoyable and collaborative assessment experience.

Following your assessment, you'll receive a comprehensive written ADHD assessment report within 2 weeks. The report includes detailed clinical findings, formal diagnosis (if applicable), and personalised recommendations for treatment and support.

I also offer post-assessment support including ADHD psychotherapy and guidance to help you implement strategies and adjustments following your diagnosis. Many clients find ongoing support helpful as they adjust to understanding and managing their ADHD.

Inattention: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, trouble organizing tasks, frequently losing things

Hyperactivity: Restlessness, excessive talking, difficulty remaining still, feeling constantly "on the go"

Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, difficulty waiting, making hasty decisions

It is not uncommon for people with ADHD to experience challenges with emotional dysregulation, time blindness, and difficulties with processing information and decision-making. The good news is that with proper assessment and support, people with ADHD can develop effective strategies, access the right support at school, university, and work, as well as improving their relationships and self-esteem.

What is ADHD? Understanding Adult ADHD Symptoms

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain processes attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It's not simply about being "easily distracted" or "hyperactive" – ADHD can significantly impact relationships, work performance, education, and overall wellbeing.

Adult ADHD presents differently across individuals. Common ADHD symptoms in adults include:

What to Expect During Your ADHD Assessment in Brighton

My ADHD assessments are thorough comprising of a comprehensive diagnostic process using internationally recognised structured and semi-structured assessment protocols based on the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and assessing symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity as well as how far as these impact your life.

I conduct ADHD assessments in two main parts.

Stage 1: ADHD Screening Assessment in my office in Brighton & Hove or online - £200

This fee covers the initial assessment, all correspondence and recommendations as to the appropriateness of proceeding to Stage 2: Assessment.

This stage takes around an hour and takes place either in person at my consulting rooms in Brighton & Hove or online. Prior to attending you will need to have completed and returned the initial assessment paperwork

If the results from Stage 1 indicate that a diagnosis of ADHD appears likely then an assessment appointment (Stage 2) can be booked. Please note, a full assessment must be completed in order for a clinical diagnosis to be given although this is not guaranteed and is dependent upon the assessment findings

Stage 2: Full Clinical ADHD Assessment in my Brighton office or online - £600

This fee covers the assessment itself, the analysis and writing up of the clinical diagnostic report, further recommendations and a follow-up session lasting 30 mins.

This second stage of the Full Clinical Assessment lasts for between 2.5 and 3 hours and can also take place in person in my offices in Brighton & Hove or online.

Stage 3: Follow-up Appointment in Brighton & Hove or online - FREE

Following assessment, I offer a free 30 minute optional follow-up appointment, either in person or online, to discuss the outcome as well as to explore any resulting thoughts, feelings, or potential implications in addition to signposting to further support.

Adult ADHD symptoms: signs you might benefit from an assessment

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition affecting both children and adults, however in adults symptoms can be more subtle and might be mistaken as personality traits or anxiety.

Core symptoms of ADHD in adults include inattention, impulsivity, and, to a lesser extent, hyperactivity which, in adulthood, can be more of an internalised feeling.

Inattention might be apparent in problems getting to work on time or focussing, being disorganised or forgetful, and struggling with time management.

Adults with ADHD can appear distracted during conversations or can have trouble following through on detailed instructions or long-term projects.

Impulsivity or hyperactivity might show up as interrupting others or often making quick or rash decisions without fully thinking things through. There may also be a history of alcohol or substance misuse, gambling, or other so-called 'dopamine seeking' behaviours.

Many adults with ADHD experience emotional dysregulation, a low frustration tolerance, and problems managing stress or multiple demands. Time-blindness and difficulties processing information and making decisions is common with ADHD. The good news is that with proper assessment and support, people with ADHD can develop effective strategies and access the correct support at school and work as well as experiencing improvements in their relationships and self-esteem.

Often, adults may not realise they have ADHD until they face increased responsibilities or until their child is diagnosed, prompting self-reflection on a lifetime of challenges.

Because ADHD symptoms can overlap with anxiety, depression, or mood disorders, ADHD can sometimes be missed or misdiagnosed.

As part of a comprehensive assessment, I would also look at other possible difficulties which might better explain your symptoms or which may, alternatively, be running alongside them and require further investigation or support. â€‹

ADHD Assessments for Women in Brighton & Hove

ADHD often presents differently in women and girls, leading to underdiagnosis or misdiagnosis. Many women seek an ADHD assessment only after years of struggling, often in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, when they finally recognise symptoms that have been overlooked throughout their lives.

For many years, it was presumed that girls couldn't have ADHD because of a historical gender bias. Girls' and women's symptoms were often dismissed as being due to anxiety or hormonal imbalance: part of a wider problem of a lack of medical and psychological research focussing on women.

Up until recently, diagnostic criteria for ADHD were based on data from hyperactive boys whereas girls, who are more likely than boys to mask or internalise their symptoms, remain less likely to be identified in childhood.

These quieter signs such as daydreaming, forgetfulness, and anxiety can be overlooked, especially in academic settings where girls may still perform well despite struggling internally.

Women and girls with ADHD frequently experience emotional sensitivity, low self-esteem, and chronic feelings of overwhelm. They may work extra hard to mask their symptoms which can lead to exhaustion and depression. There might be difficulties maintaining friendships or managing conflict.

Hormonal changes including those experienced during puberty and the menopause can intensify ADHD symptoms.

There are many women in the UK who are not looking into the idea of a diagnosis until well into adulthood and often only after experiencing a mental health crisis or a state of burnout.

For this reason, I specialise in providing ADHD assessments for women in Brighton & Hove, with expertise in recognising the often-subtle presentation of ADHD in adult women.
